A large bronze vase with figurative decoration
17th century, China.
The vase is of oval form with pointed ends, on a similar high oval foot echoed by the neck and mouth, all of the light brown patina. The neck is flanked by two boys holding a rope with attached coins between a three-legged toad below clouds. The body of the vase is cast with a quatrefoil raised panel to both sides, the front panel depicting two scholars playing Go, both seated at a table in a garden setting with an attendant. The reverse scene shows two boys in a garden with a peach and a willow tree, ruyi fungus and a bat, one boy holding a lotus flower, the other a clam. The base with a six character Xuande mark within a square.
