Yuan dynasty, 1260-1368 AD, China

元 1260-1368 中國

Height: 93.5 cm, 36.8 inches

The Bodhisattva is seated in rajalila asana (the king’s posture) – the right arm resting upon the raised right knee, the left leg hanging down, and the straight left arm supporting the figure with the hand on the ground. He is dressed in a robe which covers both shoulders and falls down from the left side of his torso, leaving the chest and stomach exposed and ornamented with loops of beaded jewellery, before wrapping around his middle and falling in folds over both legs – the toes remain visible.
